Petru Maior University
A brief history
University of Petru Maior counts with more than 50 years of its history in education field, founded as a 3 Years Pedagogical Institute of Tirgu-Mures in 1960. This institute provided education in philology, history, geography, mathematics, music and physical education. By the years the University was evolving and becoming Institute of Higher Education in Targu Mures in 70`s, Institute of Engineers in 80`s, Institute for Higher Education in Targu Mures between 1990 and 1991. In 1991 the institution was awarded title of university and became University of Tirgu-Mures. Subsequently the University adopted its current name University of Petru Maior in 1996.
The presence of this institution in Tirgu-Mures, together with the University of Medicine and Pharmacy and the University of Theatrical Art, has provided the old Transylvanian town (historically known under different names: Novum Forum Siculorum, Marosvasarhely), that particular nucleus of spiritual, scientific and cultural life that marks the cultural level of an entire urban community where cultural, ethnical and confessional interrelationships are extremely complex and with high spiritual potential.
